Further description

The Maltese driving licence is a polycarbonate card in the standard credit card format, designed to meet EU specifications. Its front features a fine-line guilloche background design in shades of pink and blue, providing both aesthetic appeal and anti-forgery security. Scattered throughout this background are subtle images of the Maltese cross, a national symbol, with a prominent red Maltese cross positioned at the top right corner of the card. Across most of the front, the words “Driving Licence” are repeated in the languages of all European Community member states. These are arranged in curved lines without spaces between the words, forming a security pattern that is both distinctive and difficult to replicate.

On the back of the licence, the same multi-language “Driving Licence” text continues in curved lines, covering the entire surface and reinforcing the card’s security features. At the bottom left corner, there is a silhouette of the country of Malta containing another Maltese cross, further emphasizing national identity. The reverse side also includes a tabular section listing the various vehicle categories for which the licence is valid, along with the corresponding issue and expiry dates. This format conforms to EU Directive 2006/126/EC, ensuring harmonization across member states and incorporating multiple layers of security, including microtext and tamper-resistant materials.
