Electronic Vehicle Identification (EVI) is a system that uniquely identifies a vehicle electronically. More specifically it can be defined as an electronic device that allows the unique, remote and reliable communication of identifying parameters of a vehicle. It would typically comprise a secure in-vehicle data storage element, suitable and secure interfaces and a vehicle-to-infrastructure data communication element. EVI can be used for many application such as crime prevention (prevention vehicle theft), vehicle tolling, access control (e.g. overview of cross border traffic). It can also be used for enforcement purpose, not only of speeding, but also of red light running and tail gaiting.
