High-Level Group on Road Safety

The High-Level Group on Road Safety, a formal European Commission Expert Group is made up of high-ranking representatives from each of the national administrations. It was originally created in the early 1990s to help determine the contents and priorities for the then European Community road safety programme whilst establishing closer links between the Member States and the Commission on road safety- related issues.

The High-Level Group on Road Safety was given a strengthened mandate in the EU Road Safety Policy Framework 2021-2030,  to include strategic advice and frequent feedback on the implementation of the framework and of the Safe System approach in the EU.

The Group meets on average 3 to 4 times each year. Every two years there is an EU Road Safety Conference to exchange best practices and assess the state of implementation of the EU Road Safety Policy Framework.

Among the Group’s outputs, The Group occasionally presents common principles or shared good practices.

  1. Road safety measures in the COVID transitional era – common High Level Group principles as we exit the crisis
  2. High Level Group on Road Safety Best Practice Report on certain categories of Vulnerable Road Users.
