Contributing factors to crash risk

Introduction

This section seeks to explain why young novice drivers are subject to a larger number of crashes and a higher crash fatality risk. As can also be recognized in the accident patterns, four factors play an important role:

ImmaturityBiological and social preconditions in youngsters are not sufficiently developed yet
ExposureThe exposure to risky conditions and driving situations is high
Lack of experienceThe driving skills are not sufficiently developed
ImpairmentDriving performance is impaired because of use of substances, fatigue or distraction
