Road Safety: European Commission renews its commitment to the UN global partnership to build a world where roads are safe for everyone

The European Commission has reaffirmed its support to the UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF), the global partnership tackling the hard-hitting global road safety crisis we all face today.

Since 2018, the European Commission has been a founding partner of the Fund, which has been working to help halve road deaths and injuries in low- and middle-income countries, where over 90% of the 1.3 million fatal crashes occur each year.

Through the multi-annual partnership, the European Commission continues to form part of a global network of communities, civil society, governments, companies and UN agencies that are addressing critical gaps in national road safety systems.

The UNRSF mobilizes financing from private, public and individual donors channelling resources to high-impact, scalable and sustainable road safety projects worldwide. In operation in 46 countries across 5 regions, assistance is already going to support better urban planning for school zones, low emission non-motorized transport, speed management and cleaner safer used vehicle standards.

“The European Union has always prioritised, and continues to prioritise, road safety: it is a critical global challenge. Being part of the UN Road Safety Fund partnership ensures our collective efforts can go even further. With our new $3 million commitment to the UN Road Safety Fund, we hope to have a lasting impact on safe and sustainable mobility in developing countries around the world.” Adina Vălean, European Commissioner for Transport
