Representatives from the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) met for the second time in Da Nang, Vietnam on 21 June 2019 to discuss today’s road safety challenges and the best solutions. The event, hosted this time by the ASEAN Secretariat provided many opportunities to broaden understanding of road safety policies and measures in both regions. Road safety is one of the fields where ASEAN countries wish to strengthen their regional cooperation and learn from EU experience.

The event, as the first workshop organised in Brussels on the 30 and 31 January this year, brought together senior transport officials and experts from EU and ASEAN countries, as well as representatives from the private sector. Their common objective was to build a network of experts in view of future cooperation between the two regions. A new study on harmonising road safety legislation of ASEAN countries with UN legal instruments was presented, highlighting the main pros for such a convergence. Speakers detailed two other areas where EU experience can be of great use for ASEAN professionals, namely the safety of vehicles, including type approval rules and roadworthiness testing, as well as the collection of harmonised quality data as a prerequisite for designing effective road safety policies and measures. Participants agreed on a number of concrete follow up actions on both topics.

The two workshops were supported by the E-READI programme (Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument), which facilitates the exchange of knowledge and experience between the EU and ASEAN across a broad range of policy areas.
