Workshop on network-wide road safety assessment methodology

Directive 2008/96/EC on road infrastructure safety management, as amended by Directive (EU) 2019/1936, provides that, by the end of 2024, the Member States should do the first Network Wide Road Safety Assessment, that will reveal what are the most dangerous road sections, to be addressed with targeted inspections and remedial measures.

This Workshop on the Methodology for a Network Wide Road Safety Assessment served to present the model developed by external consultants and endorsed by the Expert Group on Road Infrastructure Safety, which will be an useful tool improving road safety. The model considers both the specific features of the road that can predict the risk of accident, as well as accident statistics.

The assessment exercise returns a safety rating of each road section, on at least 3 categories (the model works with 5 categories). It is to be redone every 5 years, in order to see the evolution and to refocus on the most dangerous road sections.
