In July 2010 the Commission adopted the Policy Orientations for Road Safety 2011-2020, which provide a governance framework and strategic objectives for action aimed at improving road safety. As part of the Policy Orientations, the Commission has established the very ambitious target of halving the number of fatalities by 2020 in relation to 2011.

One of the priority areas for action defined by the Commission in its Policy Orientations is the promotion of modern technology and Intelligent Transport Systems to increase road safety, in particular Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
In this context, the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport is organising a meeting to discuss with stakeholders and authorities the potential of state-of-the-art vehicle technologies to reduce road accidents and how to promote the deployment of the most effective ones.
